Tuning Applications For Your IT Infrastructure: What Can Go Wrong - Rosemary Francis, Ellexus

Even when the software and IT infrastructure have been well designed, installation and configuration problems often arise. In high-performance computing, developers often spend a lot of time optimising their code. However, the deployed system will inevitably be designed differently from the development environment. When moving applications from local storage to a distributed system, something as simple as a file stored in the wrong place can significantly affect performance. Accessing the file system unnecessarily can slow down the network and hinder other jobs that share that resource. In this talk Rosemary will be sharing some of the ways in which software can be miss-configured and how those problems may be avoided in future. She will outline design decisions and best practices that we will all have to care about more as applications move to the cloud.
